Hints for a topographic map of tuning properties in primate motor cortex

چکیده
The spatial organization of tuning properties of neurons in the primate motor cortex is still unknown. Here, we analyze the directional tuning of neurons and local field potentials recorded in the motor cortex of monkeys performing center out arm movements. We found that the tuning of nearby neurons, and of single neurons and local field potentials recorded from the same electrodes is more similar than expected by chance. These findings are in agreement with a spatial organization of tuning properties in motor cortex.

Mapping Behavioral Repertoire onto the Cortex
A traditional view of the motor cortex in the primate brain is that it contains a map of the body arranged across the cortical surface. This traditional topographic scheme, however, does not capture the actual pattern of overlaps, fractures, re-representations, and multiple areas separated by fuzzy borders. Here, we suggest that the organization of the motor cortex, premotor cortex, supplementa...
متن کاملColumnar organization in the motor cortex.
Despite many attempts to find spatial structure in the functional properties of neurons within the primary motor cortex (MI), there is still no compelling evidence for such structure despite the anatomical similarities between motor cortex and other neocortical areas. This is a longstanding puzzle in motor cortical physiology because topographic structure of function is a hallmark of primary se...
متن کاملTopographic shear and the relation of ocular dominance columns to orientation columns in primate and cat visual cortex
Shear has been known to exist for many years in the topographic structure of the primary visual cortex, but has received little attention in the modeling literature. Although the topographic map of V1 is largely conformal (i.e. zero shear), several groups have observed topographic shear in the region of the V1/V2 border. Furthermore, shear has also been revealed by anisotropy of cortical magnif...
متن کاملA hierarchical, retinotopic proto-organization of the primate visual system at birth
The adult primate visual system comprises a series of hierarchically organized areas. Each cortical area contains a topographic map of visual space, with different areas extracting different kinds of information from the retinal input. Here we asked to what extent the newborn visual system resembles the adult organization. We find that hierarchical, topographic organization is present at birth ...
متن کاملA Model for Learning Topographically Organized Parts-Based Representations of Objects in Visual Cortex: Topographic Nonnegative Matrix Factorization
Object representation in the inferior temporal cortex (IT), an area of visual cortex critical for object recognition in the primate, exhibits two prominent properties: (1) objects are represented by the combined activity of columnar clusters of neurons, with each cluster representing component features or parts of objects, and (2) closely related features are continuously represented along the ...
